HMS Bounty is an ancient restaurant on Wilshire Blvd (ancient for LA standards) located in the lobby of the historic Gaylord Apartments in Koreatown.

Part dive bar, part steak and fish joint, HMS Bounty is a blast from the past both in their low, low prices ($3.75 drinks at happy hour) and the war veterans eating their steak next to you.

This is the kind of place you know the regulars dine at every week. That’s a good thing, remember when people did that?

Well, Bun Boy certainly doesn’t and its behavior like mine that drives poor places like the HMS out of business. Sorry, HMS. Good luck to ya.

The food here surprised me. I expected thin, rubbery steaks (think Sizzler) and the famous fish and chips, well, I expected delicacies direct from your grocer’s freezer section.

None of this was the case, thankfully. The breading on the fish was thin and crispy and the fish (whatever the hell it was) was flaky and moist.

The Prime Rib really shocked me. I hate prime rib. A slab of bleeding flesh the size of a pancake that grows cold in 10 seconds? No thanks! But this bone-in carcass sizzled and was thick, juicy and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Quite good.

No wonder this place is still around after all these years.

I’m sure the $5 for a shot and a beer special doesn’t hurt either…
