El Cholo is LA’s oldest Mexican restaurant (est. 1923) and it certainly looks it.
Known for its kitchy decor and old school Mexican food, El Cholo is a fun and a not-to-be-missed LA landmark.
Each menu item is listed next to the year it was first introduced to the menu.
Carmen’s Original Nachos are so basic, you’ll laugh when you get them. It’s just a big hot plate of melted cheese over chips. And a few jalapenos thrown on top for some color. They’re SO good.
Louise found her Tacos al Carbon to be just ok while I really loved my Blue Corn Enchiladas. They were filled with shredded, moist chicken breast and not completely covered in cheese as you would expect.
I did not care for the Chile Relleno at all but was really impressed with their margaritas. While the coconut blended is as girly as you’d expect, the Pineapple Serrano was very tasty and not filled with gross sweet and sour mixer.
Come here for a fun, throwback, old timey Mexican night but just order wisely. Order any of the enchiladas and you’ll be fine. Stray from those….and don’t say I didn’t warn you.
