Sqirl is a trendy and cute bakery slash coffee shop in Silverlake that is famous for their brioche toast and homemade jam.
Seeing as carbs and sugar are the polar opposite of all that is LA (although hipster Silverlake likes to buck the trend shortly after starting it) I wanted to check out the madness.
Another tasty dish Sqirl does well is the Poached Egg and Kale on Brioche. I guess, that way you don’t feel so bad eating the least healthy bread ever, if there’s a smattering of a hip greenery on top.
While both items were absolutely delish, I found the egg and kale more satisfying. Would have liked my brioche with jam a bit more… toasty. I would have even been fine with partially burnt, that’s how good the bread is.
Sqirl makes their own almond milk in-house (and since coffee is a food group in Silverlake) I decided to try their Almond Cappucino.
While tasty, I would have liked more almond milk and twice as much espresso. I’m not sure if that’s a reasonable request or not.
I arrived at Sqirl right when they opened but I’ve heard this place is a nightmare to find seating at (much like Sycamore Cafe) if you show up too late or on weekends.
I guess the early bird gets the brioche!
(BTW, forgive the photo at the very bottom. I knew this infamous Charles Manson house was in the area so I had to check it out. Serial killers and coffee with toast. The perfect day)
