Apricot and Manchego "Monte Cristo"

Apricot and Manchego “Monte Cristo”

The spot that Muddy Leek now takes over has been many things over the years.

First it was Wilson (owned by one of the Beach Boys, great Mexican inspired dishes), then it was Sublime Food Lounge (had a good burger).

Things I’ve enjoyed but concepts that have never taken off. Problem is, this place is too far away from downtown Culver City to snatch any passersby.

Muddy Leek is relying on you to know where you’re going.

And, in the existential sense, do any of us know that?

My first impression of this place was the fantastic sounding menu. I wanted one of everything. Always a good sign.

No entrails. No internal organs.

Creative, sustainable, organic, seasonal comfort food!

Best of all worlds!

HIGHLIGHTS:

Niman Ranch Pork Ribs: Loved the seasoning, the large portion and the meaty goodness.

Merguez Sausage Pizzetta: Super thin, plenty of flavorful sausage pieces, every bite had something going on.

Potato Spinach and Leek Tart: Loved everything about this, great crust, perfectly seasoned and cooked vegetables.

Braised Beef Cheek: Loved, LOVED the super tender and juicy beef wrapped in a potato pancake.

Peach Upside Down Cake: A tad small for the price but absolutely heavenly combo of sweet peach, fluffy cake and salted caramel. I wanted 10 more.

Great cocktails, especially loved the Blind Lemon Jefferson. Super simple but tastily effective. Yes, I said tastily.

Fantastic server! Didn’t catch his name but he was patient, funny and knowledgeable.

LOWLIGHTS:

I wasn’t blown away by the Chicken Fried Bacon but once I put the tomato chutney on top, it made more sense. Prepare to put straight up fat in your mouth, there’s no way around it.

Mary’s Chicken Breast was solid but I don’t think I’ve ever died over a chicken breast unless it was completely coated and then deep fried. It’s 100% my own issue.

While I enjoyed the Apricot and Manchego Monte Cristo, I would have liked a bit more crisp on it, some of it turned out a bit soggy. Didn’t stop us from devouring it!

Judging by the decent Tuesday night crowd, I would say Muddy Leek has a solid chance of making it. Just keep doing whatcha doing, Boo.
