Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Chorizo Picante

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Chorizo Picante

Some of the best days happen when you’ve not planned anything.

When you roll out of bed not knowing what the day will bring and then you find yourself on Hollywood Blvd staring at three pitbulls in the back of a truck bed wearing sunglasses. (not joking)

The only game plan for the day was to dine at The Lazy Ox.

As it’s located downtown, we knew a day of fun and frolic was in store for us, we just needed to fill in the blanks.

It ended up being one of the most fun days ever!!

First, I wanted to get a look at the famous Bradbury building, built in 1893. There was a wedding photoshoot going on so, of course we stayed and snapped pics, appearing in all of their shots and generally annoying the shit out of the bride.

As we wandered around Broadway, we started to see feathers floating along the street. Was there some kind of Voodoo ceremony in progress, I thought excitedly?

Following the feathers, we soon noticed groups of kids holding skanky pillows racing towards Pershing Square.

Organized Pillow Fight!

We followed them, like that old hippy guy at a party that thinks he’s 20 years younger and wants everyone to think he’s cool.

Aw, you can just smell the dust mites...

After spending an exhausting 20 minutes knee deep in (photographing) a pillow fight, we (I) felt a bit peckish.

We continued along Broadway and made ourselves to the infamously historic Clifton’s Cafeteria, the largest existing public cafeteria in the world.

During the depression, customers would come in and dine for only a penny!

It appears they only used a fraction of those pennies on the decor!

Are we deep inside a forest?? Or just merely inside a culinary mecca!

I grabbed a tray and slid around items like chicken Tettrazini and questionable pot roast until I hit the dessert section and grabbed their “famous” confetti jello.

A mental hospital would have been proud to call this dish their own!

Yes folks! It's edible!

After spending a few sugar rush induced moments wondering if the woman sitting next to us had set up permenant residency at her table, we explored the archaic forest themed restaurant.

Replete with dusty animatronic bears fishing, deer aplenty and some weird, tiny chapel inside a big tree trunk.

Where to next folks??

We headed to Jalisco Bar for an afternoon cocktail!

Ladies Night was in full swing.

Ladies Night was in full swing.

This place is a trip.

Enormous. Ghetto. Empty.

A few Mexican guys at the bar, a hefty bartendress and a jukebox we took full advantage of.

This is how you drink a Tecate!

After shutting down that bar 30 minutes later, we crumpled up our beer cans and headed to Toranoku for quirky, experimental cocktails at this Japanese themed hot spot.

We were right next door to The Lazy Ox and gave the hostess our cell number to call us when our table would be ready.

Jameson Whisky and BBQ Sauce!

The Lazy Ox was worth the wait!

I always appreciate a fresh spin on traditional fare.

When you’ve been drinking, you kind of crave fun familiarity (like a burger with something weird on it).

However, if you don’t recognize 75% of the contents of a dish, you’re probably not ordering it! (What the hell is a sunchoke??)

Luckily, Lazy Ox avoided that pitfall and provided us with everything our drunk hearts could desire!
